The state was named in honor of
King Louis XIV (* 1638, r. 1643, † 1715) of France, the "Sun King".
The annual "Mardi gras" ("Fat Tuesday") carneval celebration and
the Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, LA are world-famous.
On August 29, 2005 the city of New Orleans, LA was flooded and devastated
by monster hurricane "Katrina". Over 204,00 homes were destroyed or damaged.
In 2014, nine years after the disaster, many areas of the city
are still under reconstruction.
