brother of the English King Charles II. (* 1630, r. 1660, † 1685)

"Albany" derives from "alba",
the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland.

History Timeline
The area was originally inhabited by Algonquian Indian tribes, namely the Mohican and the Iroquois.
1614 Fort Nassau founded as Dutch fur-trading post.
1624 Renamed in Fort Oranje (Orange) and established as permanent Dutch settlement.
1652 Renamed in Beverwijck (Beaver District) and incorporated as village into the Dutch colony Nieuw Nederland by Governor Peter Stuyvesant (* c. 1612, † 1672).
1664 Renamed in Albany after British conquest of the Dutch colony New Netherlands.
1673 Renamed in Willemstadt after the Dutch briefly recaptured the colony in August 1673.
1674 The name Albany was restored after the British took permanent possession of the colony with the Peace treaty of Westminster, effective on March 5, 1674
1686 On July 22, Albany was chartered as a municipality by Thomas Dongan (* 1634, † 1715), Governor of the Province of New York. It is the oldest US city charter still in effect.
1797 Albany became the capital of the State of New York, second oldest state capital in the US.
