Charlotte Amalie Harbor
on St. Thomas Island

US Virgin Islands comprise the major islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas (along with the historically distinct Water Island), and some 50 islets and cays. The Virgin Islands archipelago was originally inhabited by Ciboney, Carib, and Arawak Native American tribes.

The capital Charlotte Amalie, located on St. Thomas Island, was founded in 1666 by Danish settlers as Taphus (Danish word for "beer halls" !). In 1691 the town was renamed to Amalienborg in honor of Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (* 1650, † 1714), wife of Christian V. (* 1646, † 1699, r. 1670-1699), King of Denmark and Norway.

US Virgin Islands is the only US national territory where road traffic drives on the left !
