Flag Terminology
Flag composition
Hoist The term is used to describe the height of the flag while flying, it also refers to the edge of the flag that is attached to the flagpole or staff (hoist end).
Fly The term is used for the length of the flag as measured from the attachment to the farthest point or for the distance from the end of the canton to the free end of the flag or for the width (length) of an extended flag.
Fly end The term is used for the part of the flag that flaps in the wind and endures the most stress becoming sometimes frayed.
Heading Heavy fabric used to secure the flag to the flagpole halyard line. Usually made of durable cotton or synthetic canvas.
Grommet Brass ring or eyelet (normally in the heading) for mounting outdoor flags.
Canton When a canton exists, it is found in the upper left-hand corner of a flag. By definition, it is the »top inner corner of a flag«. Flags with cantons include the United States flag (Stars and Stripes), the Georgia, Hawaii, and Mississippi state flag.
Field The section of the flag between the hoist and the fly ends is called the field or, sometimes, the ground. It does not include the canton.
Flagpole
A flag is most often attached to an object of support such as a flagpole, staff or flagstaff, or mast. In general, when a flag is flown outdoors, if flies from a flagpole. When a flag is carried in a parade or displayed indoors, it is attached to a staff. On a boat or ship, a flag may be attached to a mast.
Ornament The flagpole or staff may be topped with a decorative ornament or finial. A finial is an uppermost decoration such as the sphere illustrated above.
Truck The truck is the cap at the top of a flagpole and may have holes to attach pulleys to raise and lower a flag.
Halyard The term used for a rope or cable used to raise and lower a flag on a flagpole.
Cleat The device used to secure the bottom of the flagpole halyard.
The »Study of Flags« is referred to as vexillology.

United States of America
(»Stars and Stripes« - »Old Glory« - »Star-Spangled Banner«)
#1004 // January 2, 1952 // Philadelphia, PA
200th Anniversary of the Birth of Betsy Ross (* 1752, † 1836)
The stamp pictures Betsy Ross, an upholsterer, in her parlor presenting her design
of the first »stars and stripes« flag to the members of the Flag Committee:
General George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross Jr.
The stamp image features a reproduction of Charles H. Weisgerber's 1893 painting
»The Birth of Our Nation's Flag«
Since no images of Betsy Ross existed, Weisgerber created her face from
photographs of her daughters and other female relatives.
[Read more about the life of Betsy Ross and the legend of her creation of the first American flag]

The National Flag Day on June 14th of each year was officially established by the Proclamation
of the 28th US President Woodrow Wilson (* 1856, in office 1913/1921, † 1924) on May 30, 1916.

Independence Day
Flag of the United States of America
48-stars version
LONG MAY IT WAVE
Many US postage stamps were issued over the years
featuring the American flag in various different ways.
Current 50-stars version - adopted on July 4, 1960
13-stars »Betsy Ross'« design,
circle of five-pointed stars
13-stars »Francis Hopkinson's« design,
six-pointed stars arranged in rows
On June 14, 1777 the »Second Continental Congress« officially adopted the »stars and stripes« version, which »Betsy Ross« may have designed and sewn, and resolved
"That the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the
Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
However the shape and arrangement of the stars was not mentioned. For that reason and despite the flag resolution the early years of American independence featured many different flags. The first American flag was officially in use from June 14, 1777 - May 1, 1795.

The Stars and Stripes
Classic Collection
Sons of Liberty Flag, 1775
Inscriptions on the back of each stamp describe the flag.
This set of 20 stamps chronicles the development of the American flag from Colonial times to the present. Each flag has an interesting story behind it. For example, the design of the Francis Hopkinson flag was once attributed to Betsy Ross. Historians now believe this often-told tale is untrue. Adopted on June 14, 1777, the birthday of the Hopkinson flag is celebrated each year as »Flag Day«. This was the first flag to feature both the stars and stripes in its design.

The State of Mississippi still honors in the canton of its State flag, adopted on April 23, 1894, the »Southern Cross«, the battle flag of the Confederate States of America. The stars of the Confederate Battle Flag represented the eleven states actually in the Confederacy plus the States of Kentucky and Missouri. On April 17, 2001 the majority of the Mississippians rejected by referendum a proposal to change the design of the State flag. The official description of the flag is quite interesting ...
